What to Put on a Hang Tag: A Checklist for Clothing Brands
Updated
A hang tag is a printed card attached to a garment that displays brand, size, price and care information. Most brands put the brand on the front and the practical details on the back. Here is what to include, and what Indian retail labelling commonly requires.
Front of the tag: the brand
- Logo or brand name — the one thing a shopper should remember
- A tagline or collection name, if you use one
- Finishing touches such as foil, embossing or spot UV, which draw the eye to the logo
Back of the tag: the details
- Size, and the style or SKU code
- Price (MRP)
- Fabric composition, such as 100% cotton
- Care instructions or care symbols
- A barcode or QR code linking to your store or Instagram
- Your website and customer care contact
Labelling for retail sale in India
Garments sold pre-packed at retail in India generally fall under the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, which call for declarations such as the manufacturer's or packer's name and address, country of origin, the common name of the product, net quantity or size, month and year of manufacture, MRP inclusive of all taxes, and consumer care details. Many brands print these on the hang tag.
Requirements depend on how and where you sell, and the rules are amended from time to time, so check the current rules for your products before you print.
Printing size, price or barcode variants
If each size or price needs its own tag, you do not need a separate design for each. A single order can include multiple size or price variants of the same design — send the variant list with your artwork and the run is split accordingly.
